ANCILLARY: MAGAZINE ADVERT TARGETS (PLANNING)

After receiving such remarks from our audience feedback we were given a number of targets that included changes to positioning, editing and typography to ultimately improve our magazine advert, these targets are;

  • Develop the logo as it doesn't signify what we want it to.
  • Needs more information on it as at the moment it does not follow conventions of magazine adverts.
  • Modify the placement of the text as it is compositionally not very good as it stands.
  • ANCILLARY: DIGIPAK TARGETS (PLANNING)

    After receiving such observations from our audience feedback we were given a number of targets that included changes to typography, images and colours to ultimately improve our digipak, these targets are;

    1. Change the image on the front cover to a photo of the boy on it from a long shot in front of him - in order to better establish the image of the artist, currently there is too much of a focus on what he is looking at, with a miscommunicated connotation of royalty.
    2. Change the font size on the back cover as to make it look more professional.
    3. Choose a different font type to use on the inside left cover of the digipak in order for it to look more realistic.
    4. Edit the inside right cover to make the whole of the face look the same, with less of a focus on the ear, do this by using a burn and dodge on the face perhaps.
    5. Make adjustments to the colour scheme on the inside covers as they currently look too plain and do not fit the font colour well.

    MUSIC VIDEO : TARGETS (PLANNING)

    After receiving such comments from our audience feedback we were given a number of targets that included changes to narrative, editing and camerawork to ultimately improve our video, these targets are;

    • To start a number of sequences with establishing shots to clearly communicate to the audience what is happening, working our way in chronologically to close ups rather than starting a scene with them and have it confuse the viewer.

    • Improve the general framing of our main fixtures within each individual shot - with a particular focus on centring the people/objects and not having wasted space or parts of things unnecessarily cut off.

    • Better communicate who the texts messages are from and two in each of the scenes where they occur - in order to build a stronger narrative and to more clearly communicate to the viewer what is happening.

    • Add in more narrative enigmas/ foreshadowing of events to interest the audience more, thus engaging them more. One particular case is when the character in the relationship is seen to leave his girlfriend's house, have him unknowingly drive pass the person who his girlfriend is having an affair with. In this we will place a focus on the person he see's, which will create a narrative enigma.

    • To film our whole video in a light that is clear to see and consistent, so shooting during the day and eliminating the clips that have been shot in dark or poor lighting, to be replaced by shots in clear lighting.

    DIGIPAK FIRST DRAFT/AUDIENCE FEEDBACK (PLANNING)

    Audience Feedback:

    • Great photos, good framing.
    • Good positioning of text, particularly on the back cover.
    • Change the photo on the inside left cover that has a focus on the character rather than the background.
    • Change the text layout on the inside left cover to make it look more like a credit sequence on an album cover.

MUSIC VIDEO : AUDIENCE FEEDBACK (PLANNING)

After completing the first draft of our music video we showed it to audience to hopefully gain some constructive feedback on our video. Upon showing our audience the video we received the following feedback:

    • The narrative is clear and established well.
    • There is a varied use of camera shots, framings and angles.
    • There are significant issues with lighting in many of the shots.
    • We have not effectively framed a substantial amount of our video.
    • The narrative could be developed more with changes to mise en scene.
    • In certain scenes it is unclear what writing on phones says.
    • The use of camera angles could be used a lot better - with an emphasis on more close ups to show emotions and reactions to events.

MAGAZINE ADVERT FIRST DRAFT / AUDIENCE FEEDBACK (PLANNING)

    Audience Feedback
    • Excellent picture, good use of focus on camera
    • Text is very clear
    • Follows the same theme as the digipak

    • Placement of the text especially ‘flume’
    • Icons bottom left need brushing up on
    • Looks a bit plain at the moment, could do more with it

    ANCILLARY LOCATION (PLANNING)

    ANCILLARY LOCATION on PhotoPeach

    ANCILLARY UPDATES (PLANNING)

After feedback from our media teacher, we have decided to make a digi-pack that relates more to the underlying themes throughout the album as a whole, rather than an album cover that solely relates to our music video. By doing this, our Digi-pack becomes more representative of the artist and what he stands for.

Our new idea for our front cover is to get a long shot of the artist from behind, over looking the the city of London. We will take the shot at sunset where we get to see the the effects of the lights. We are trying to create the connotation that Flume plans to reach the heights of the city one day and be successful. The Back cover will be the same setting, just a long shot in front of the artist.

The inside covers will display the transition of Flume buying records from a store, to Flume playing the record in front of an audience. This again links to the contents of the lyrics in the whole album, where it creates themes such as aspirations and adventure.

    UPDATE: TIMELINE OF EVENTS (PLANNING)

Below is a timeline of events for our new music video, the timeline shows roughly what the narrative will follow.

    Tuesday, 6 January 2015

    UPDATE: CHANGES TO ACTORS (PLANNING)

Due to the difficulties we faced trying to find availability for our original actors, we decided for our re-shoot to recruit two actors who are very easily accessible.

Lead Male actor: Danny O Brien

Danny is a member of the A2 media group so will be very easily accessible and more committed. He'd be very hands on as he will play a part in the camerawork and the setting up of each shot. Danny, although doesn't have any acting experience, wants to gain the best grade possible so will be patient.

    Lead Female Actor: Imogen Quail

Imogen is a close friend of ours and would too be very committed. We wouldn't have to work around her schedule as she would be very willing to film whenever we need her, which is good when you're
constructing a video in a short space of time.

    Male supporting actor: Geraint Padfield
Being a member of the group, I also will be very easily accessible which makes the constuction of our video quicker and more efficient.

UPDATE : CHANGES TO VIDEO (PLANNING)

We have decided to make dramatic changes to our music video. After showing our video to our teacher, upon the feedback we have received we have come to the decision to change our video. We are now going to have a purely narrative video, dropping the conceptual element. We have decided to drop the conceptual side of our video as we found the clarity of our actual concept was somewhat lacking.

The narrative will once again be centred upon a relationship, this time with a clearer storyline containing a better insight into the relationship and more detailed documentation of the couple. We are going to have three stages in the video, the introduction, the argument and falling out/separation and then the getting back together at the end of the video.

Now that we are filming again we have a better grasp of what we want and need in our video, with experience and knowledge of how to avoid and solve issues. There is however a reasonably large time constraint due to the fact that we are going to re shoot. With this in mind we will be choosing actors in accordance with their availability.

    AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM TEACHER (PLANNING)

I met my new teacher this week, we discussed my coursework and she gave the following feedback:

    - The narrative is not easy to follow.
    - There is no actual concept that our video is based upon.
    - Our video does not contain many conventions.
    - It did not capture and hold the attention of the viewer.
    - Editing techniques were poorly executed.
    - Film more with the actors in it.

Therefore, I will change/do the following things to improve my work:
                                                                                    by 23/01/15

    -complete new timeline and shotlist
    -  Include more angles and shots in sequences to make the narrative clear.
    - Get rid of the conceptual element to the video.
    - Research conventions to gain a better understanding of generic conventions, then include these.
    - Ensure it is clearer and moves at a faster pace so the audience can follow the narrative and be interested in it.
    - Watch editing tutorials to correctly edit certain shots.

    - Use actors that can be easily contacted and filmed with.
